There are questions for reflection after every chapter, which I think would be quite helpful for both small group study and individual reading. Some good insights and reminders for discernment, but nothing new or earth-shattering. Henri Nouwen, as always, makes seemingly complex things personal, practical, intelligent, and very readable—all at the same time!

Now, in association with the Nouwen Legacy Trust, Michael Christensen—one of Nouwen’s longtime students—and Bouwen Laird have taken his coursework, journals, and unpublished writings and created the definitive resource on spiritual discernment. The idea and experiences are clearly Nouwen, but there were many times where I felt that the style didn’t really fit. Refresh and try again. Although good to read for the individual, this book seems niuwen suitable for community, an ideal Nouwen promotes.

Discernment is the last of a three-book series that was compiled after Nouwen’s death the first two are Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation. Excellent read Written in plain English, I found this book to be an excellent source of guidance for my own spiritual journey.

Laird and Christensen have edited Nouwen’s writings, both public and private, to show us, in a seamless and intimate way, Nowen’s own struggles and the discernment processes he followed to grow in his relationship with Discernmeent and the world.

You are mine and I am yours and you belong to me. Nouwen is authentic and insightful on every page. Like any good spiritual director, Nouwen makes the process very down-to-earth, showing how his interactions with all of God’s creation, and prayer, led him to the branching off path that would take Nowen ever closer to his real self and thus to God.

Jesus stands in our midst and beckons us home so that we can be restored to our true selves. The results of a Christian Century magazine survey conducted in indicate that Nouwen’s work was a first choice of authors for Catholic and mainline Protestant clergy. I think the editors do a good job with that, even if there are times that something doesn’t quite sound right. Nouwenn emphasizes listening to the Word of God—in our hearts, in the Bible, in the community of faith, and in the voice of the poor.

I bought this book before I knew the others existed.
